From Scan Data to Visualization-Ready Assets
Converted furniture scans into cleaned, retopologized and UV-prepared assets for product visualization and e-commerce imagery.
This project involved converting scanned furniture into finished 3D assets for product visualization and main product images used in e-commerce.
The challenge
Raw scan data could not be used directly. The models needed to be correctly positioned, cleaned, rebuilt with manageable topology and prepared with UVs before they could move into visualization.
Different product sizes also created repeated work when each variation was handled separately.
My contribution
I was responsible for preparing the scanned models for visualization. My work included:
- Correcting position and rotation
- Cleaning unwanted scan data
- Refining the shape and product details
- Creating new topology
- Preparing UVs
- Validating measurements and model quality
Improving scan positioning
Correcting the position and rotation was the first step in the clean up process. To make this step more consistent, I created a reusable Houdini tool that helped place scanned models in the required orientation.
The tool was also used by colleagues in their work.
Creating size variants
For a bed-headboard project, I improved the workflow so that one scanned size could be used as the starting point for several product sizes.
The process generated the required size variations and provided a cleaner base for producing the final refined meshes. This reduced the need to repeat the complete scan-preparation process for every size.
Quality checks
I compared the cleaned model with product measurements and reference material to ensure that its dimensions and details were accurate.
Before handoff, I also checked:
- Position, rotation and scale
- Final topology
- UV setup
- Surface normals
Outcome
The finished models were used for product visualization and main product images on e-commerce platforms.
The project also produced two reusable workflow improvements: a Houdini positioning tool used by colleagues and a method for creating several headboard sizes from one scanned starting point.
No formal time-saving measurement was collected, so the benefit is presented as improved consistency and reduced repeated work rather than a quantified result.
